Dr. Cheryl L. Pollard
Dr. Cheryl Pollard joined MacEwan University in 2009. Previously, she held positions as clinical nurse specialist and nurse researcher in mental health and has also had progressive leadership positions within rehabilitative health, home care, and supportive living systems. The foci of Dr. Pollard’s professional practice has been to promote mental health and resilience in people, and their caregivers, who personally live with mental illness. Current research activities focus on health care provider competencies that promote effective caregiving. She is also a strong advocate and mentor for those interested in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Dr. Pollard was part of the inaugural group of SoTL fellows at MacEwan University. Since that time she has been involved in SoTL projects related to the consequences of errors in undergraduate nursing education, the use of gamification to promote in-class engagement, means of identifying and supporting students with anxiety within the classroom, and the identifying perspectives on how nursing students learn to work with older people. Her doctoral research focused on the depictions of psychiatric-mental health nursing care in film, using the research tradition of interpretive visual inquiry. Earlier research projects focused on evaluating interventions aimed at improving health-related hardiness within individuals who were managing a mental illness.
Dr. Pollard is currently serving MacEwan’s Faculty of Nursing in the role of Associate Dean.
