As veteran teachers face more time demands, placing student teachers grows more difficult

This is an interesting article about some of the issues of supply and demand as it relates to student teachers.  I know that many people do not think about when it comes to pre-service teachers.

Finding a place for students to hone their nascent teaching skills is an important and difficult task.  Given the pressures on teachers now, finding a teacher who is willing to take responsibility for these formative stages of development is crucial to the future of the profession.

Student teachers need to be realistic when it comes to what the focus of their studies are.  One young friend of mine wants to be a “horse whisperer” because she wants to follow her passion.  However, she is finding it difficult to find people to pay her for what she wants.  I know others who would like to be professional surfers, but again making a living do this is tough.  For student teachers, they need to make sure they have marketable skill sets.  When you look to what schools need, there always seem to be vacancies with instrumental music, special education and ESL and senior sciences.

Pre-service teachers need to be sure to think about where they want to go and make a realistic plan to get there.
