Ongoing Research

My research interests at MacEwan University primarily encompass development of novel flow-through microstructured based and silica monolith (Figure 1) based microreactors. The research goal is to develop new class of enzyme (catalyzed) immobilized reactors which can be used for proteomics and other biotechnology-based proteomics applications. These microreactors could also be employed for online catalyses of different reactions depending on the catalyst immobilized. We are particularly involved in immobilization of organocatalysts and demonstrating utility of these reactors in natural products synthesis based reactions.
Other research thrusts include development of porous polymer monoliths (Figure 2a) for high performance chromatography. The utility of traditional but custom made porous layer open tubular (Figure 2b) columns (PLOT) is in GC is being evaluated. In addition, special classes of porous polymer monoliths, molecular imprinted polymer films coupled to microfluidic devices for chromatography and extraction are being developed.

3. Other side and collaboratory project interest involves chemical profiling of bioactive compounds in medicinal plants that have been commonly used and classified as highly potent in Africa, yet they have not been studied.
