Adding a Widget to the sidebar

Widgets are an easy way to add different types of content to the side columns of your site. Although there are basic widgets available to you, be sure to check out the Widgets and Plugin categories to find other pieces of information you can add to your site.

Create and edit links

Adding links to a post is super easy, with the link tool right in the editor. However, sometimes you just want to create a list of links on the side of your site. To do this involves 2 steps:

  1. Add the widget.
  2. Create the links

First, go into the Appearance tab and select Widgets from the submen. Add the Links Widget to your Sidebar, ensuring it’s in the location you want it in.

Now, it’s just a matter of adding Links. The process is pretty straight forward. If you create new categories and add your links to them, your links will appear on the sidebar in the category groups.

Create a static page for your home page

By default, WordPress will list all your posts on your home page. If you would prefer to have a static page and have your posts listed under a menu item, you can set this up under the Reading settings.

Dashboard – where it all starts

The Dashboard is your control panel that provides you with access to everything you need to make changes to your web site. It’s gives you a quick overview of your information what’s happening on your site.

Reading settings let you customize how your readers will experience your blog – whether from the web or their feed reader. This is where you would also set a specific page for your home page.

Discussion and Comment Settings

WordPress tries to create relationships between you and your readers by enabling comments on your posts. As you create your post, you can override the default settings, but before you do that you should decide if you want comments on your site and set the global settings accordingly.

To start, select Discussions from the Settings tab. You’ll be presented with a screen where you can choose:

  • Do you want people to comment on your posts?
  • Do you want to approve comments before they’re posted?
  • What words do you want to flag as not acceptable?

Choosing a Theme

MacEwan offers a number of themes to choose from, all branded with the MacEwan logo. To see what your site will look like, just click on any of the thumbnails (Appearance –> Themes) and you’ll see a preview of what your site will look like.

Photos and videos are a great way to liven up your web site. Although this tutorial will show you how you can add videos and photos, be sure to enable the Viper Video Plugin, which allows you to easily embed videos from Vimeo, Google, YouTube and other popular web sharing sites.
